My name is Ayna, a human rights activist and advocate for women’s rights. As a refugee currently residing in an AZC camp, I dedicate my time to supporting women in any way I can. Today, our Women Community in Galaxy organized a bicycle lesson, a significant step towards empowerment and freedom.
Cycling, a simple act, represents profound freedom, particularly for women from countries with restrictive regimes. In many African and former Soviet countries, women face severe limitations on their freedoms. Turkmenistan, my homeland, is one such place where women and girls are not allowed to cycle, a reflection of broader systemic repression. Under the dictatorship, women’s freedoms are severely restricted, and activities like cycling are prohibited for women.
At 27 years old, I am too learning to cycle for the first time. This experience has been incredibly liberating, symbolizing a reclaiming of my freedom. Our initiative today is more than a lesson in balance and pedaling; it is a lesson in empowerment, resilience, and the pursuit of freedom for every woman, regardless of her background.
We’re not just teaching women to cycle; we’re giving them the tools to reclaim their independence and self-worth. Our work will remind other women and people all of the importance of freedom and equality.
