Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, the authoritarian former president and current chairman of Turkmenistan’s Halk Maslahaty (People’s Council), has been publicly referred to as “Father of the Nation” for the first time. This new designation, announced by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov during a January 9 meeting, further cements Berdimuhamedov’s status as a dictator who has systematically suppressed human rights and dissent during his rule.
The meeting, which focused on preparations for the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s neutrality and the UN’s designation of 2025 as the “International Year of Peace and Trust,” was broadcast on state television. Meredov used the new title to exalt Berdimuhamedov, solidifying the cult of personality surrounding the leader.
Observers believe the “Father of the Nation” designation will join the long list of honorifics used to glorify Berdimuhamedov, including “Arkadag” (Protector) and “National Leader of the Turkmen People.” These titles, often accompanied by terms such as “Hero-Arkadag” and “Our Compassionate Arkadag,” are part of a propaganda campaign designed to portray Berdimuhamedov as an infallible and benevolent figure.
Berdimuhamedov’s rule has been characterized by extreme authoritarianism, earning him the label of a true dictator. His regime has consistently suppressed freedoms, censored the press, and imprisoned dissenters. Turkmenistan remains one of the most repressive countries in the world, with severe restrictions on civil liberties, a lack of free elections, and an absence of independent media.
While state propaganda celebrates Berdimuhamedov’s leadership, ordinary Turkmen citizens face poverty, restricted movement, and the absence of basic human rights. International organizations continue to condemn the regime and call for reforms, but Berdimuhamedov’s new title reflects the government’s ongoing focus on glorification rather than addressing the dire conditions faced by its people.
Turkmenistan’s dictatorship remains a stark example of unchecked power at the expense of human dignity and fundamental freedoms.
