During each course period, Taalhuis Amsterdam reserves a handful of free spots in their Dutch courses for undocumented refugees, in collaboration with organizations such as ASKV-Steunpunt Vluchtelingen. These opportunities are made possible through the generous donations of students who contribute extra on top of their own course fees.
Thanks to these donations, many refugees have been able to learn and improve their Dutch. One such student is Ayna Matiyeva (27) from Turkmenistan, who has been living in the Netherlands since May 2023. Ayna is a human rights activist and has worked as a translator, interpreter, and language teacher. Fluent in Turkmen, Russian, Arabic, Turkish, and English, it is no surprise that she is now adding Dutch to her repertoire, studying in Tessa and Ella’s A1.2 group.
We spoke with Ayna about her activities and her experience learning Dutch. Despite A1.2 being a beginner level, she impressively conducted the entire interview in Dutch.
“I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to learn Dutch,” I shared. It significantly aids my integration into Dutch society and enhances my sense of freedom. I’ve also highlighted about my homeland, Turkmenistan, where freedom is severely restricted, especially for women. Sharing my story in a free and open society underscores the stark contrast between my past and present, and, that’s what shows a free Ayna.
Many thanks to Myrte, my teachers and the students who donated, making it possible for refugees like me to pursue education and integration. Through Taalhuis Amsterdam and the support of generous students, I am not only learning a new language but also taking significant steps towards a freer, more empowered life in the Netherlands.
